The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center
Providing Exceptional Care

Comprehensive Breast Health Services

The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center proudly holds the designation of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence from the American College of Radiology (ACR). This accreditation signifies the Center's commitment to excellence in breast health services, which include education, early detection screenings, and comprehensive patient navigation and support for breast cancer patients.

Utilizing advanced diagnostic techniques, such as computer-assisted mammography, ultrasound, and a specialized breast biopsy system, the Center effectively locates abnormalities and obtains tissue samples. Recognizing that a breast cancer diagnosis profoundly impacts patients and their families, The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center offers a holistic, patient-centered approach.

Led by fellowship-trained breast surgeon Dr. Edna Kapenhas, the team comprises board-certified radiologists, a pathologist, oncology nurses, radiology nurses, a patient navigator, and certified technologists. Additionally, satellite diagnostic services are available in East Hampton and Hampton Bays.

State-of-the-Art Technology for Timely Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Digital Mammography with Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)

Digital Mammography with Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)

The most effective screening tool for early detection of breast abnormalities is Tomosynthesis™, which, according to a 2014 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, led to a reduced recall rate and increased cancer detection when added to digital mammography.

  • High-Resolution Ultrasound

    High-Resolution Ultrasound

Used in conjunction with a palpable mass or questionable mammography to complete the diagnosis

  • Hologic Affirm Prone Breast Biposy System

Hologic Affirm Prone Breast Biposy System

The Affirm Prone Breast Biopsy System enhances patient and provider experiences by offering faster, more comfortable procedures through increased automation and superior imaging. With high-quality 2D or 3D Tomosynthesis™ imaging and a field of view over 6.5 times larger than older systems, clinicians can better visualize tissue and detect subtle lesions and faint calcifications that may be missed with traditional methods

  • Breast MRI

  • Ultrasound Guided Biopsies

Minimally invasive, used diagnostically in cases of a positive or suspicious finding

  • Stereotactic Biopsy

    Stereotactic Biopsy

Used diagnostically in the case of a positive or suspicious finding

  • MRI Biopsy

    MRI Biopsy

Another diagnostic tool in cases of a positive or suspicious finding.

  • Nuclear Imaging

    Nuclear Imaging

Breast nuclear imaging, or molecular breast imaging (MBI), is a diagnostic technique that uses radioactive tracers to visualize breast tissue. This non-invasive method detects breast cancer by highlighting abnormal metabolic activity not visible on traditional mammograms. MBI is particularly beneficial for women with dense breast tissue or those at high risk, involving the injection of a small amount of radioactive material and imaging with a gamma camera.
