The numbers, in the end, were impressive. The Ellen Hermanson Foundation over the last two decades has awarded more than $4 million in grants to fund breast cancer research and support services on the East End of Long Island. This year’s 22nd annual Ellen’s Run 5K, held Sunday morning under sunny skies at Southampton Hospital, brought in additional funds with more than 800 participants taking part.

Ellen’s Run, an East End annual 5k race, will take place on Sunday at 9 AM. This run is the signature fundraiser for the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, and brings muchneeded awareness of breast cancer to Long Island. Founded in the memory of Ellen Hermanson, a local who battled cancer for nearly 10 years and became an activist and voice for breast cancer victims, Ellen’s Run lets her legacy and fight live on.

For Debbie Merrick, Ellen’s Run was going to be just another road race on a relatively flat and easy course, one that she could enjoy with her husband, Geoff, and their two daughters, Allie, 12, and Maddie, 10. Then she reached the grounds of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital prior to the 22nd annual 5K and truly realized the spirit of the event.

Dr. Julie Ratner, who 22 years ago launched Ellen’s Run — and later the Ellen Hermanson Foundation — in memory of her younger sister, who died of breast cancer at the age of 42, said during a conversation at The Star the other day that she wanted everyone on the East End to know that no one is ever turned away at the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital.

Twenty-one years ago, naysayers told Julie Ratner the run she was founding to honor her late sister, Ellen Hermanson, would never take root. Today, it is so firmly rooted in our community that Ellen's name is synonymous with breast cancer care on the East End. The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital gives state of the art care to all, regardless of ability to pay. And the 22nd Annual Ellen's Run 5K, will take place this Sunday, August 20.

Cancer mortality, incidence, and prevalence in South Fork residents are disproportionately high compared to New York State and the nation.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Soon cancer patients on the East End will have less of a drive to seek treatment and supportive care.

Southampton Hospital and local officials broke ground at the site of the future Phillips Family Cancer Center on Saturday.

The Ellen Hermanson Breast Center, a designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), offers a wide range of essential breast health services, including education, early detection screenings and breast cancer treatment and support. Ellen's Well, an initiative established by The Ellen Hermanson Foundation that is administered by the Southampton Hospital Foundation, offers psychosocial support to East End breast cancer survivors and their families, as well as programs that include Neighbors Helping Neighbors, transportation and, Pink Bags.
